Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud

Yeshwant Vishnu Chandrachud (July 12, 1920 – July 14, 2008) was the longest-serving Chief Justice of India, serving from February 22, 1978, to July 11, 1985.

He was involved in several landmark judgments, including the ADM Jabalpur v. Shivkant Shukla case, also known as the Habeas Corpus case, where he was part of the majority that ruled against the right to habeas corpus during the Emergency. This ruling has been widely criticized. After this, he made various landmark judgements and overturned various rulings.

Other important cases and subjects during his tenure included matters of constitutional law, labor law, and criminal law. He presided over benches that delivered verdicts on issues related to the fundamental rights of citizens and the interpretation of the Indian Constitution. He had a long and impactful career and contributed significantly to the development of Indian jurisprudence.

He was succeeded by Justice P.N. Bhagwati.

His son, Dhananjaya Y. Chandrachud, is the current Chief Justice of India.
